After finishing third in the March primary, state Rep. Napoleon Bracy, D-Saraland, said Wednesday he will support Mobile Democrat Shomari Figures in the race to represent District 2 in Congress, describing him as the “leader” the district needs.
Bracy looked back on the almost 14 years he spent serving parts of Mobile County in the state legislature and said Figures’ experience in the federal government and residency in the district makes him the right choice on the April runoff ballot.
“It’s no secret that there are many issues facing us, from healthcare and education to jobs and gun violence,” Bracy said in a statement. “I believe that with the experience Shomari brings as the only candidate who has worked in all branches of government at the federal level, he is the candidate who will move our party forward and win in November.”
The endorsement came days after Alabama Democratic Conference Chairman Joe Reed, who previously supported Bracy, announced his organization will back Figures going forward.
In a statement, Figures’ campaign described Bracy’s endorsement as “a major blow” to state Rep. Anthony Daniels’, D-Huntsville, campaign in the Mobile area. Figures and Daniels earned the most votes in the March primary, and will face each other again in the April runoff.
Figures said he was proud to receive Bracy’s support.
“District 2 voters are ready for strong, united Democratic representation that can win in the runoff, win in November and go to Congress to fight for the issues that matter most,” Figures said in a statement. “This endorsement adds significant momentum to our grassroots campaign and we are grateful for the confidence Rep. Bracy has placed in our campaign and our ability to represent District 2.”
